In January, 2004, Silversands and Coextant will implement a Hyper.Net pilot project at a local government in the City of London. The goal of the pilot project is to upgrade an existing SharePoint Portal Server V1 installation to SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services, and to demonstrate the benefits of the combined SharePoint/Hyper.Net platform as a foundation for automated deployment of Office documents to the web.
|
The Hyper.Net pilot project follows a successful deployment of Sharepoint Portal 2001 and will extend advanced publishing capabilities to the council's public web site, which serves a population of 190,000 residents with a range of local government information and services.
A primary objective outlined within the government's 2004 Cabinet Business Plan was to “seek to exploit opportunities provided by new technologies to streamline service delivery and reduce costs.” To meet this objective, the council turned to Silversands plc, a proven leader in SharePoint services in the UK.
Silversands investigated the possibility of utilizing Hyper.Net together with Microsoft SharePoint Portals 2003. Hyper.Net appeared to be a strong fit because of requirements to bridge content stored in Office documents to the government's intranet and internet web sites without introducing new technology, education, or administration requirements into the organization.
"Based on the requirements, we recommended our customer pursue a Hyper.Net Content Automation solution with SharePoint used as the content store," comments Andrew Walmsley of Silversands. "The technology allows us to create a solution that is transparent to content authors and consumers, and enables the council to support increasing content without increasing cost. The government's requirements for a consumer-optimized web site are also achieved with minimal custom coding, and future integration with Microsoft technologies or 3rd party tools becomes easily achieved with standard Microsoft development approaches. As such, the solution we proposed represents an optimal solution that achieves a state-of-the-art content solution without the traditional costs or complexity of such a solution."

Microsoft Office and SharePoint
The customer will be moving from an existing SharePoint Portal Server V1 installation to SharePoint Portal Server 2003. As part of the pilot process, the Hyper.Net project will demonstrate the benefits of the combined platform. The existing versions of Microsoft Office will be used to create web content that is ready to be populated to the intranet or internal web sites.
Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Visio, is the starting point. The solution will allow “content contributors”( people who create the documents for meeting minutes, agendas, etc.) to use the authoring tools, techniques, and skills they already have, and save documents into either a normal file share or into SharePoint, minimizing exposure to technology and making it possible for everyone to become a content contributor without additional education.

Hyper.Net is designed to enable organizations to implement web solutions that hide technology from users. Hyper.Net will instantly and comprehensively extend the use of Microsoft Office and other related technologies (i.e. SharePoint Products and Technologies) to intranet and internet web sites. The initial focus will be on deployment of information associated with the daily business of government such as meeting minutes, agendas, procedures, manuals, and other information.
Hyper.Net will transform the documents into normalized, relational XML data stored in Microsoft SQL Server™, and create multi-format hypertext content that is “ready-for-web.”
|
Microsoft SQL, .NET and Internet Explorer
Transformed content is stored as XML within SQL relational tables, so that SQL implementation techniques can be used to create dynamic relationships between hypertext topics. Relational content will be synchronized across servers both inside and outside the firewall using standard database functions. To finish the project faster, published information will be accessed via the Hyper.Net Framework SDK, an object-oriented interface that supports rapid web site construction using Microsoft .NET.
Microsoft Internet Explorer will be used as the main browser to view documentation and information that has been deployed.
